What is Gravity?

What is Gravity

Gravity is a fundamental force that acts on all physical bodies caused by the presence of mass. It is responsible for many phenomena observed in the universe, such as the formation, shape and trajectory of celestial bodies, the gravitational attraction between atoms and molecules that causes objects to fall when dropped, and liquids to flow in response to gravity. You can observe the effects of the gravity across the universe.

In simple terms we can say that, It is the force of attraction between any two objects in the universe. The next time you take a trip outside, you can say that it’s thanks to the gravity pulling you down from above.

It is a physical phenomenon that pulls everything with the strength of electromagnetic forces. All matter in the universe has a gravitational pull to each other. All celestial bodies are under its influence from each other’s mass. It affects how objects move and rotate around each other as well as on their own axis. Inertia is caused by the force of attraction between two bodies and is opposed by gravity, which makes an object take longer to move when it has more mass or resistance in its movement.

There is an attraction that every single particle of matter has to another. We call this force gravity. It affects our planet in many ways, one of them being that it determines how high we can fly! The force between the earth and a satellite keeps the satellite moving around our planet in an orbit. If there were no gravity, satellites would move out of the earth’s influence and life on Earth would be very different from what it is today.

Who discovered gravity?

It was Sir Isaac Newton who found the theory of Gravity along with many other contributions to Calculus, Optics and mechanic’s field. According to the theory of Gravity,  there is a Universal Force that attracts all matter.

This force occurs naturally and it brings things having mass towards one another. Albert Einstein describes this force in his general theory of relativity as well. He states that gravity is not a force but it occurs because of the curvature of spacetime and because of the concentrations of mass or energy. Einstein gave this idea in 1915 and in that he further states that it is like an agent that gives weight to the object with mass and it causes them to fall to the ground when you drop them.

Modern Science treats this concept as a most important concept . It is equally a intriguing force of nature. It plays very integral role in astronomy, oceanography, and many other important fields.

Did You know?

You can watch Gravity (2013) movie and learn more about it.

There is another great movie Interstellar (2014) for you. It will give you a more profound idea and effects of gravitational force.

Narrated by world-renowned physicist Dr. Stephen Hawking, The movie takes us on a journey inside Einstein’s general theory of relativity where we discover how gravitational force affects the earth and beyond. Must watch it!
