Batman Begins Review: (Spoiler-Free)
Introduction to the Brooding man
After the disliked and unapologetic Batman and Robin (1995) movie, Batman fans were not hoping for another heart attack. But they were given Batman’s best and most realistic origin story by Christopher Nolan.
Batman Begins explores the mind of Bruce Wayne, unlike any other Batman origin movie. It is the accurate and most realistic interpretation of the character. We can all agree that Nolan had outdone his work. He delivered the kind of movie that was way ahead of its time.
Many points are here to discuss in the movie, but it will go for spoilers. I will try my best to be brief.
After his parents’ death/murder/assassination, Bruce Wayne goes on various trips to discover peace and give strength to his anger and revenge. He dislikes Gotham or Wayne Manor, so he prefers to be away. These things reminded him of his dead parents. He did not want his life consumed by those. He did not want to sit idle and do nothing. When Bruce is out, Alfred takes good care of Bruce’s property.
What changed Bruce?
When Joe Chill, the guy who has killed Bruce’s parents, is about to present in the court for the hearing of Wayne’s murders, Bruce wants to take revenge. But Rachel shows him the right path, and he decides to walk on the shown path, which is other than revenge.
Bruce knows he doesn’t have the strength to fight crime in Gotham, so he goes away for a while and joins the League of Shadows (“League of Assassins” in Comic Books). Ducard trains him, one of the senior members of the League of Shadows, which Ras Al Ghul runs (“Raas Al Ghul pronunciation different than the comic book pronunciation Resh Al Ghul”).
The League of Shadows tries to turn Bruce into someone he is not and shows him the path he doesn’t want to walk on, so he leaves them and returns to Gotham.
He tries to find a way he could use his training with the League of Shadows and strikes fear in the hearts of criminals and the mafia. In his first attempts, he finds his mistakes and improves upon them. Slowly he learns and becomes efficient at being a “vigilante” who punishes criminals. Alfred also supports his master Bruce Wayne in his quest for Justice. They reach a point and name the anonymous vigilante ‘the Batman.’ Batman is not corruptible and cannot be bought. He fights only for justice and the betterment of his city.
New Threat to the Batman
Ducard becomes the leader of the League of Shadows after the accidental death of Ras Al Ghul and leads the team to destroy the city of Gotham. He poses a threat to Bruce Wayne and Batman. One of the notorious villains, “The Scarecrow,” is another threat to Batman in the movie. Both the characters are trying to fulfill their schemes to defeat Batman. Ducard tries to destroy the Wayne legacy and Gotham, while Scarecrow wants Batman to be afraid of his fear of toxins.
Batman has learned stealth, engaging with many enemies, and fighting with various combat techniques. He has learned to be a Ninja from his mentor Ducard from the League of Shadows. One excellent concept of Batman being a ninja tells it all about how he might fight or do all the ninja stuff.
In the movies, Bruce faces many moral, ethical and righteous choices, and he handles them very well. Some of the choices he faces, we face them too, but we might not have the courage to do what he does.
So many characters come in the movie, and all play their role accurately. This movie’s vibe is tough to forget. Gotham City is murky, left out from the world, poor, corrupt, run by mafia and underworld, hopeless, and scared. The city brings out all of our dark demons and fears. It is beyond saving and has crossed its limits, and no one has tried to save it. People are using their power to corrupt the city more. Bruce sees this, forcing his hands to pick up the cape and cowl to free Gotham as an incorruptible symbol of justice.
Love of Bruce and Rachel
The love story between Bruce and Rachel is a silent-silent romantic one that develops with time. Some great action scenes in the movie make your jaw drop because you may have never seen them or you may never see them again in your life. It is a one-time high-octane ride that you will never forget. It feels like the entire cast and crew got together to create something extraordinary, and all their efforts paid off.
Batman faces a threat from the police, but after a point, they also start believing in him. Batman gains his name among the people of Gotham and the Police Department (Gotham City Police Department – GCPD).
This movie is exciting, emotional, dramatic, inspirational, motivational, and in one word – “awesome.” Many scenes of the movie will forever stay in your memories even after so many years. Seeing the poster or hearing someone talking about the movie will bring your feelings that arose while watching it.
This movie is best suited to watch in the dark with no lights on, making you feel pretty awesome.
Nolan shows many realistic aspects of Bruce Wayne and Batman and delivers a solid masterpiece. If you follow the comic book and respect new ideas, this movie is definitely for you. If you are a hardcore comic book fan, this movie is also for you.
Batman Begins Cast and Character Review:
-
Christian Bale – Bruce Wayne / The Batman (10/10):
Christian Bale is one of the accomplished characters. He plays a psychologically disturbed person very well who knocked it out in the movie ‘Psycho’ in the year 2000. He completely takes over the scene and makes you feel the emotions like responsibility, fear, joy, excitement, and thrill in Batman Begins.
Bale plays a very diverse character in this movie. He first has to show his revenge and anger sides in the movie after the death of his parents. Then, Bruce shows the taste of poverty and injustice while in prison. He then trains and learns to be a ninja and respects his trainers, and we see a pupil who never gives up on his teachers. Then, Bruce returns to Gotham and wants to take revenge and picks up a gun. Later, he realizes he doesn’t want to be a murderer.
Bale shows a billionaire playboy side to his personality that is lavish, and all the characters show what rich people care about women and cars. He then becomes the fear-inducing Batman and fights the underworld and crime. It shows the range of Bale. Honestly, nothing could have played Batman more accurately than him. His ‘Batman voice’ is also perfect in this movie.
-
Michael Caine – Alfred Pennyworth (10/10):
Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth plays the role perfectly in Batman Begins. He shows Bruce when he is wrong and shows when he can be right. Caine wants the best for Bruce and wants him to be happy. He doesn’t want Bruce to throw his life away. His famous words “I told you so” remains one of the great reminders for Bruce in the movie. Michael plays a parent-like figure without boundaries. He jokes when he sees Bruce doing something unconventional, and instead of scolding him, he makes funny remarks. The duo works well together. Alfred is played with care and attention in the movie.
-
Morgan Freeman – Lucius Fox (10/10):
Lucius is yet another father-like figure to Bruce. He is comedic and accomplished like Alfred but less responsible. The relationship between him and Bruce is a ‘hush-hush’ one. Both do not directly talk openly about various points, but they imply, and we know what they are talking about, they both know what the matter is, but they do not say it out loud. Morgan Freeman, there are no words for him. He plays a stunning and charming Lucius Fox and helps Bruce by providing technology.
-
Katie Holmes – Rachel Dawes (10/10):
Katie Holmes is another person who guides Bruce when he makes wrong choices. Alfred and Lucius both act as guides to Bruce, but Rachel goes into detail. Katie brings out a responsible side of Rachel Dawes; after all, she works with the justice department in Gotham as DA. Katie shows perfect aspects of her character that gel in the movie and helps Bruce become the game-changer character.
-
Gary Oldman – Jim Gordon (10/10):
Gary is in many movies. He has played a wide range of characters in his acting career. His version of Jim Gordon is the perfect one. Gary plays a little unsure, surprised, and responsible Jim Gordon. He stays loyal to Batman. Gary plays more comedic characters than others. He also rocks his thick mustache. Gary was perfect as Jim Gordon in the Nolanverse.
-
Cillian Murphy – Scarecrow / Jonathan Crane (10/10):
Cillian Murphy was a perfect scarecrow in Nolan’s Batman world. He was scary, organized, and determined. Cillian was a perfect adversary in this particular movie to Batman. Many hardcore comic book fans might find the Nolan version of the Scarecrow a bit different, but still, they would appreciate his performance as one of the best put in the film, period. Cillian needs no introduction when it comes to play any role. You might enjoy his work in Peaky Blinders as Tommy Shelby.
-
Liam Neeson – Ducard
Liam Neeson plays Ducard. He delivers his side of the story in the mix very well. Ducard teaches Bruce how to be a vigilante and shows him the path. He plays a ruthless mentor that only wants the results. Liam plays a sad, optimistic, assertive, and determined adversary to Batman very well.
-
Rutger Hauer – Earl
Rutger plays ‘Earl’ in the movie very well. He runs the business on behalf of the Wayne family and plays a charming character. His role didn’t have much to do in the movie, but he played a crucial role. You may remember this actor from Blade Runner. He played the character of Roy Bratty.
-
Colin McFarlane – Commissioner Loeb
Colin McFarel plays a single-minded Commissioner who doesn’t think twice very well. His role is limited, but his role is integral in the sequel.
-
Linus Roache – Thomas Wayne
Linus has a brief role; all Thomas Wayne roles are. But he delivered a parent figure with Bruce till whatever time he had with him. Linus played the role of an optimistic, honest, righteous, and reasonable person. He cares for Bruce in the movie. His voice guides Bruce in his life and is a critical part of the movie.
Music:
Hans Zimmer made a unique soundtrack for this movie. The Batman Begins soundtrack was a mixture of Batman’s bold, powerful, and dominating personality. It was sad when it needed to be. When you hear the soundtrack, you will immediately know it is from Nolan Batman. This soundtrack makes you want more and more even though you are getting enough in the movie. It excites you and makes you jump up from your seat. It is a powerful Batman score that inspires you to be like Batman and make a change.
