Interstellar Movie Review: (Spoiler-Free)
Introduction to the Movie
Interstellar is yet another great movie by Christopher Nolan. After Gravity (2013), Interstellar came out in 2014, a year later. Many people felt that there would be a series of movies about Stars and Space, but Christopher Nolan tried to bring his imagination to life. The trailers for this movie did not speak much, but people were sure that Nolan would surely outdo his previous work. Interstellar movie is all about survival and hope. The character of Matthew McConaughey is put in a situation where he has to make hard choices and save the planet.
What Interstellar Movie is about?
The movie starts simple and vague about the situation and characters. But you get all kinds of thoughts about what is going to unfold. You see a world that is dying, Crops are dying, and food and air are filled with dust. There is a probability that many people have died leading up to this point in the movie. The world didn’t need more invention but an idea to save the planet and its species. The few crops that grow, such as corn, are the only food source for people, and these resources are already running out. The blight has already hit the people. People rely on instruments such as the radio to get more sad news instead of cheerful songs and happy television shows.
Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, is an astronaut who may have retired early from space missions. He has been surviving on his own with his family. Now he has to lead a team of astronauts to search for Dr. Mann (Matt Damon). The journey leading to finding Dr. Mann is entertaining. But after seeing him, the luster of the movie starts failing for some parts.
Emotions
The movie balances some emotions very effectively. The relationship between Cooper and Murph is between a father and a daughter. Both work nicely with each other. The introduction of Dr. Brand and Dr. Mann’s love story is shallow and underdeveloped. You might get little out of their relationships or care about their past.
The character of Professor Brand (played by Michael Caine) lately becomes unlikable and villainous. His relationship with his daughter Dr. Brand (played by Ann Hathaway) serves the purpose of the movie but does not add too much.
Cooper and his son have a very brief relationship. Since the movie has too much to cover, only some characters get their proper screen time.
The characters in the movie are not primary, but the mission is. The focus here is the relationship between time and the aging process of the characters.
Pacing and Character Choices
The movie slows down after some emotional scenes of Cooper and his daughter, Murph. Then, there is a love story element of Dr. Mann and Dr. Brand. Some crazy points get revealed later in the film.
Interstellar has some great scenes after it picks up. Some action scenes prove that Cooper was the right choice for the mission as he thinks a step ahead of his team. In the end, you will get fantastic imagery of a world of a higher dimension. The movie has a secret element of people from a higher dimension. “They” save Cooper and help keep humanity, but you always have questions about who these higher dimensional beings might be. But it works out.
The end of New Beginning
The end of the movie could be a little better and there must have been a good resolution between Cooper and Murph. Despite the end, the film is a solid Sci-Fi marvel that you can also enjoy in the future. It is one of those movies that are better when you see it in the future, as many elements of the movie change after some time. The end sparks new hopes for humanity.
Interstellar Movie Character Review:
-
Matthew McConaughey – Cooper (10/10):
Matthew McConaughey is playing Cooper in the movie. He has the right leadership qualities, responsibilities towards his team, and survival instinct. Matthew balances the character of Cooper without a doubt. Cooper has the ambition to do good for mankind; therefore, he is ready to sacrifice all he has on the planet to go on a mission.
-
Mackenzie Foy – Murph (10/10):
Mackenzie Foy as Murph has a captivating performance. Throughout the movie, the character of Murph grows and makes choices, but you would only remember Mackenzie Foy’s version of the surface having more depth and emotional bondage with Cooper.
-
Michael Caine– Professor Brand (8/10):
Michael Caine is a good fit for Professor Brand. He delivers his performance very well. Michael is an experienced actor with a long acting career and history. The character of Professor Brand was easy and easily playable by any other actor. But he did the job fine.
-
Ann Hathaway – Dr. Brand (9/10)
Cooper and Dr. Brand have a strong relationship with their mission. Ann Hathaway played Dr. Brand’s character in the movie well. She was a strong supporting actor to Cooper and his mission. Throughout the mission, the chances of success were few, but still, she stayed with her decision of Cooper, and the mission got successful.
-
Jessica Chastain – Murph (adult)
Jessica Chastain as Murph was a good fit for the adult role of Murph. Jessica’s performance felt okay, and anyone could have played her part. There was little in her character that needed more dedication.
-
Matt Damon – Dr. Mann (9/10)
Dr. Mann is a one-dimensional character with a minimal role. Matt Damon justified his position perfectly, but there was a lack of motivation for the character. Dr. Mann has been waiting for hope, and you get his sufferings. Most people may not like the portrayal of the surface, but it was well-delivered by Matt Damon.
-
Timothee Chalamat – Tom (8/10)
Timothee Chalamat, as Tom, was good and did his part well. Any actor could fit the role of Tom, but Timothee was a good brother and son to Cooper.
-
Casey Affleck – Tom
Casey Affleck, as Tom, plays a hateful and vengeful son. He is not happy with what Cooper did to him and his sister. Tom is now married and living his life saving his family. He cares about his family more compared to his sister. He evolved into a bitter character over the years, just like Jessica’s Murph.
-
Bill Irwin – TARS
Who says that TARS wasn’t one of the best-supporting characters in the movie? Bill Irwin played it perfectly. It sounded just like a robot with some very perfectly timed humor.
Music:
Hans Zimmer’s scores have never disappointed any Christopher Nolan movie, and Interstellar movie’s music score is optimistic and has a survivalist tone. It is a fast-paced, action-packed music score that helps the characters make quick decisions in a short time. If you like listening to a score that evokes a sense of taking the right decision, adventure, and excitement, then you will enjoy the music score of Interstellar.
