Man of Steel Movie Review : (Spoiler-Free)
I have to admit that being a superman is a very tough job. To all of us, he may be a guy with limitless powers and unbeatable enemies.
I first saw this movie in theatre back in 2013 and at first, I really dug this movie. Later after interval, the movie started becoming repetitive and boring. The dialogues became cheesy and uninteresting so I re-watched it two more times. Then I looked it with a different perspective and appreciated for the efforts Zack Snyder and his team had done.
The movie’s tone didn’t match with the first two trailers dropped back then. The movie had slow moments but mostly it was fast paced action movie.
Does it re-imagine or re-invent the superman? – Yes. Comparing this movie to those Richard Donner movies back in 80s, I say they worked in that particular time frame but now the time has changed and superman needed a fresh start without his underwear outside his suit. By the way, the suit looks premium and other worldly. You’ll definitely appreciate that they did so many changes to the suit.
The most amazing thing about this movie is that it captured the moments between Clarke Kent and Ma and Pa Kent. You may forget 70% of the movie at one point but you’d definitely remember those beautiful moments. The cinematography is pitch perfect with the tone and writing. Overall, you should check out those scenes they are beautiful. The death of Pa Kent is shown a little different than the comic book and older movies. In previous movies the message I received after the death of Pa Kent was – “Despite having so much power, you can’t save all.” This is a message for all of us. In life, we all have money and power but if you have a cancer, it all depends on time. You can’t do anything. In Man of Steel, you get a different message – “To be accepted by your abilities or be rejected by the society for being a freak.” Every successful person has been in the stage where he has faced rejection or discrimination. So either it breaks you or builds you. This same message is repeated with different words by Jor-El but he adds one thing more that is “Hope”. He says, “… they’ll race behind you, they’ll stumble, they’ll fall but in time, they’ll join you in the sun… in time, you’ll help them accomplish wonders.” This message shows that the society will accept the idea of superman with time. No doubt, they’ll reject him at first.
The overall message is shallow about responsibility and standing up on the side of humans than superman’s own but the point is establishing origin and it’s done very well.
The problem is last 40 minutes. Though they were fast paced but they were done well. We often read or see about superman having speed but we don’t actually see that speed aspect put in real life. It is done well if you look it as a realistic presentation of superman’s powers.
The end is not fulfilling but gives hope. General Zod locks superman in a situation where he has to make a choice of either killing Zod or let the innocent family be killed. And superman decides one thing and you get no fulfilment or cheer-ups by the scene. In fact, you’ll question the point of that scene but somehow they they tried to blend it all in. The scene before end credit is good where Clarke Kent decides to make a change by working at Daily Planet Newspaper.
Overall, you feel emotions but in few scenes. You get chills in a couple of scenes and boom within few bumps you get a rollercoaster ride of superman. You love the movie and talk about the scenes but you leave wanting more. You appreciate some scenes and bash other scenes. If you are a hardcore superman fan, it is up to you to love it or leave it.
Character Review:
1. Henry Cavill (10/10):
Henry looks like the superman should. He has chiselled face and body features. He has all the presence of superman and he delivers a killer performance as superman. His characters has many times doubts his own actions but other times he picks up and goes with the wind. He is perfect as superman and he will be perfect face and body for superman in next 10 or 20 years unless they find some really attractive superman.
2. Diane Lane (10/10):
Diane Lane was the perfect cast as the mother of Clarke Kent. Not only she is great but she had a presence in the entire movie. You cared about her but appreciated how brave and strong she was. She was a warm and calm character who gives the feeling of peace and happiness. She is not just there for the sake of being there, she helps Clarke growing up and allows him to go on his self-discovery and stands by his side in tough times.
3. Kevin Costner (8/10): Kevin Costner as Pa Kent is great in the role. He gives the same level of perfection to his performance as Diane Lane does. He goes away with a snap but his character stays a bit longer with you. His reserved and socially ambiguous characters gives an idea that world is not ready to accept something new. World judges first and thinks later. Later I had a feeling that his character died in-vain because the world starts accepting Superman. Here, Jor-El’s words are proven more right than Jonathan Kent’s
4. Amy Adams (9/10): Amy Adams is such a wonderful actor that she can blend in any role given to her because she gives justifications to the character. So she justifies the character of Lois Lane. Lois has a great knack to finding out who the mystery man really is – the guy who once saved her and had super physical abilities. The length she goes to find out about him shows how Lois is a great reporter. Lois’s character was the bridge in this movie. She played a major role in story.
5. Michael Shannon (7/10) : General Zod is played well but lacks the charisma in the movie. All the dialogues delivered by Michael Shannon are best to his ability but still you don’t feel the threat or danger. Michael did the best he could but you’d feel like anybody could have played the role. The problem is the back-story and what makes him so fearsome and protector-of-the-race. You get some scenes of his military might and command over his people but you really do not know much about his character. But he plays his role well.
6. Russel Crowe (10/10): Jor-El is more than a character – he is a missing piece of the puzzle. He is played perfectly by Russel Crowe. Jor-El is not just a projection talking to superman, he actually helps superman save earth. You know more about Jor-El than any other version of Superman Movie. You understand about his skills and abilities. But one thing is questionable – being a scientist Jor-El has his fight-suit and fighting ability. He can fight off most of the soldiers of Zod’s coup.
7. Laurence Fishburne (10/10): Laurence Fishburne as Perry White is perfect. His character is like a milestone, wherever Lois gets stuck, he guides her. He is also a good guy who is not afraid of troubles. He cares about the life of his staff.

Music :
The re-invented score by Hans Zimmer is invigorating and exciting. Though nostalgia trumps everything, this score is every bit as good and in fact it is better. The sound editing is very well done. After The Dark Knight Rises amazing score, Hans Zimmer again invented amazing beats. If you just listen to the score, you’ll immediately go back to the scene and enjoy the movie more.
